Friday 1st December 2023 - Design Technology in Action Day
An early start from Guernsey meant that we were in Gatwick and catching the Gatwick Express to Victoria with plenty of time to do a spot of sightseeing before the lectures began. Group photos at Big Ben and looking at the architecture around the streets on the way to the Emmanuel Centre was a good warm-up to a chilly day in London.
Joining many schools from around the country the students were presented with a diverse range of speakers talking about their design journeys and products that they had developed. A particular highlight was the lecture from Tim Fu the head architect at Tim Fu Studios and his talk on ‘The Future of Architecture in an AI Driven World’. Having previously worked at Zaha Hadid architecture studio he gave us a good insight into the possibilities of using AI in the development of architecture using first hand examples:
Other speakers included Jude Pullen from the BBC’s Big Life Fix documentaries, who looked at creating prototypes for IKEA and Lego and Sebastian Bergne, who talked about making everyday objects special. The students also took part in a hands-on design workshop to solve a given design brief.
Some free time afterwards to enjoy the Christmas lights of London on the way back to Gatwick before the flight home to Guernsey to end an excellent design led day out in the capital.
