Student awarded Brock scholarship

NEWS  SIXTH FORM , MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES , HISTORY , SIXTH FORM CAREERS , SIXTH FORM ENRICHMENT

Every year, Brock University in St Catharine’s, Canada, awards a full academic scholarship to a student in Guernsey. This partnership has been ongoing for many years and honours the legacy of local Guernsey man Sir Isaac Brock who commanded the British and Canadian forces during the War of 1812.

This year we are delighted that the award has been won by Upper Sixth student, Lydia. She tells the story of how she achieved this.

"I first heard about the scholarship from seeing it in the local media when I was younger, but I hadn’t considered applying until last year. The application process involved sending my academic transcript, letter of recommendation, and why I was applying to the States Education Department. I was then interviewed to discover more about my interest in Brock and capabilities for studying so far from home. To be offered this scholarship is a true honour and I am excited to represent my island in a new continent. I have always wanted to travel and explore new places, so I am profoundly grateful to both Brock University and the States of Guernsey for helping me to reach my goals.

I have attended The Ladies’ College since Remove, and I’m currently in the Sixth Form. I take A-levels in History, English and French. This September I will be travelling to Canada to start my four year degree where I will continue studies in History and French. Both of these subjects will be greatly benefitted by studying abroad, as it will give me a new global perspective which I can apply to all aspects of life.

However, I definitely wouldn’t have got here by myself. I would like to say thank you to Miss Dudin my Careers Advisor, Mr Henderson my referee, and Dr Marshall my Form Tutor for helping me throughout the university application process. I would also like to say a special thank you to Miss Clements and Mrs Cheshire for creating such a lovely Sixth Form environment over these past two years. I will certainly be sad to say goodbye. Finally, thank you to all the teachers and staff who have taught me throughout my time at The Ladies’ College, your time and support has not gone unrecognised.

Having lived in Guernsey all my life, moving to Canada will be a big change but I am super excited for what the future will bring. I cannot wait to explore new places, expand my knowledge, and meet new people."
