Key Stage 3

Girls in Remove and Lower Four currently study French as their core language. We use the interactive "Studio" course.  During the Lower Four they also learn German as their second foreign language, using the "Stimmt" interactive course.  In Upper Four the students have a choice about which languages they wish to take - Spanish is introduced as an extra option, using the "Viva" interactive course.  Girls usually study two languages in Upper Four and then have a free choice about their (I)GCSE specialities.

Our Lower Four students will be able to study two out of the three languages offered from September 2020.

Our Upper Four students should select a minimum of one out of the three languages offered : GCSE Spanish, IGCSE French and German.

Key Stage 4

All students are expected to study one foreign language and many are encouraged to widen their repertoire with a second language.  We follow the Edexcel IGCSE courses for French, German and Spanish.  All three languages are examined at the end of Upper Five with a speaking test, as well as listening, reading and writing tasks.  The topics covered by the IGCSE are the same for all languages:

  • Topic A: Home and Abroad
  • Topic B: Education and Employment
  • Topic C: Personal Life and Relationships
  • Topic D: The World around us
  • Topic E: Social Activities, Fitness and Health

Advanced Level

We offer Edexcel GCE courses in French, German and Spanish.  Teaching is often shared with our colleagues at Elizabeth College and classes may be mixed.  We are fortunate that we have native speakers as our Foreign Language assistants who enhance our speaking practice.

Assessments:

Within each year group, students are assessed in written and oral work, as well as in listening and reading comprehension.  The courses are usually taught jointly between The Ladies' College and Elizabeth College.
