The Art and Design department is passionate about exhibiting and celebrating artwork and a continual programme of exhibitions linked to both internal and external agencies.

As students develop as creative individuals, they will be exposed to a wide range of art, from the traditional masters in painting through to the present day. Extra-Curricular opportunities are available to those students with a passion for Art, including a new Art History theory club.

Within the department, we are always seeking to inspire, challenge and stimulate students.  A variety of trips and visits are incorporated into the curriculum across all ages and a comprehension programme of visiting artists. These experiences have inspired not only the immediate students undertaking Art and Design, but also brought the school together to appreciate the many aspects that Art undertakes.

The highlight of the secondary Art and Design year is the exhibition of the work by our GCSE and A Level students. This takes place every May and results improve with each passing year. The exhibition fills the whole Art block for a number of weeks, of which a private viewing evening takes place and then it is open to the public.

The external moderator from the exam board also visits the exhibition to moderate the internal marking of artwork needed to produce examination grades. Students are encouraged to be ambitious in their outcomes. Candidates work thematically and their responses are highly individual and varied, with the department achieving top results, higher than the UK national average, across all examination groups.
