The Collas Crill Moot 2015

NEWS  SENIOR SCHOOL , SIXTH FORM

The Ladies' College winners!

Olivia Atkinson and Lily Davison represented the Ladies' College in the final round of this excellent and unusual competition, on Tuesday afternoon.

They were defending a fictitious case of libel brought by the prosecution (Elizabeth College students), acting for 'Floella Dawson', a well- known celebrity TV chef. The newspaper, 'the Daily Bugle' had depicted Floella as a 'Flo-sie' in a cartoon. The image of a female falling out of a taxi and obviously the worse for drink could possibly have represented the TV chef!

Lily and Olivia were defending the newspaper, arguing that her poor reputation was well known and nothing had been suggested about her reputation that was not already known by the public. The speeches were very well planned and answers to tricky questions from the lawyers presiding over the case were answered intelligently. After a short deliberation the three 'judges' returned a verdict of not guilty for the 'Daily Bugle' and announced the girls to be the overall winners of this year's competition. Well done to them!

We had 10 Lower 6 students involved in this year's competition. Pairs of students were invited to apply after a presentation by  a team of Collas Crill advocates in October. Thereafter, the team gave up their time to provide 3 practice Moots (one at each of the three schools) with alternating weeks of coaching in order to enable students from Ladies' College, Elizabeth College and Grammar School to learn court etiquette and present their cases effectively.

We are very grateful to Collas Crill as this scheme is rarely available to 6th form students in the UK and provides a valuable insight about a possible career in law as well as providing students with the confidence and experience in public speaking.
