Melrose is a place as unique as your child - a home for learning, discovery, and personal growth.
The first step in a lifelong love of learning
Welcoming girls from Lower Prep (Reception) to Form III (Year 6), Melrose is a vibrant and nurturing community set within a beautiful Georgian building, nestled in the heart of The Ladies' College campus. Since 1949, Melrose has been the heart of our Pre-School, Prep, and Junior Departments—where girls are encouraged to grow in confidence, curiosity, and capability.
At every stage, our pupils are nurtured, inspired, and encouraged to be the best they can be. By the time they move on to Senior School in Remove (Year 7), they are exceptionally well prepared - academically, emotionally, and socially - for the next exciting step in their educational journey.
Melrose is more than a school - it’s a joyful, big-hearted place where learning is magical, individuality is celebrated, and the foundations for a lifelong love of learning are laid.

“Melrose pupils feel motivated to aim high, question ideas, and take brave steps beyond their comfort zones, developing as independent learners driven by their own self-belief. Above all, they enjoy school and embrace the wealth of opportunities our broad and exciting curriculum provides.”
Mary Lawson, Head of Melrose

Nurturing young minds
We believe that learning should be an adventure - one that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence from the very beginning. Our exploratory, experience-rich curriculum develops key future-ready skills, ensuring that every girl builds the mindset, adaptability, and independence she’ll carry with her long after her time at Melrose. From Pre-School onwards, our students learn to:
-
Know Themselves – Developing independence, resilience, and emotional literacy
-
Lead and Influence – Working collaboratively, taking responsibility, and embracing leadership
-
Play and Create – Engaging in imaginative and enquiry-led learning
-
Analyse and Adapt – Reflecting on challenges and exploring innovative solutions
Project-based learning
Through project-based learning, girls make meaningful connections across subjects and apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts from science investigations and enterprise projects to performances and creative expression.
Digital literacy is introduced at an age-appropriate level, including early coding, programming, and responsible technology use. These experiences equip children with communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills that will evolve throughout their time with us.

Small classes, big opportunities
We believe that every child deserves individual attention, guidance, and encouragement. That is why we maintain small class sizes to ensure the best possible learning experience:
- Lower, Middle, and Upper Prep (Reception, Year 1 and 2) have a dedicated form teacher and a learning support assistant in each class. They also have PE and French with a subject specialist teacher.
- Junior Department (Years 3, 4, 5, and 6) have a dedicated form teacher, and the support of a team of learning support assistants. They also have subject specialist teachers in a wider range of subjects.

Nurturing happy, balanced individuals
We care deeply about promoting positive wellbeing for our pupils and staff. We aim to nurture mental and emotional resilience, equipping students with the confidence and strength to navigate challenges in school and beyond.
By placing wellbeing at the heart of our school, we create an environment where every child can flourish - both academically and personally.

“We must teach our children.
To smell the earth, to taste the rain, to touch the wind, to see things grow, to hear the sun rise and night fall. To care.”
John Cleal
House Spirit
Pupils are welcomed into one of the College Houses from Junior Remove (Year 3), often following in the footsteps of siblings, parents, or even grandparents—creating a wonderful sense of tradition and connection across generations. This special moment is marked by our very own 'Sorting Hat' Ceremony, inspired by Harry Potter, where each child is joyfully allocated their House.
Throughout their time at Melrose, pupils take great pride in representing their House in a variety of events, including House Athletics, House Swimming, and other friendly competitions that build teamwork, school spirit, and lasting memories.
Learning Support
We believe every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. Our Learning Support Department, led by Mrs Nicola Ingrouille, provides targeted assistance, identifying individual learning barriers and creating personalised strategies for academic and personal success.
“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
