Pastoral care

Ladies College Guernsey

Listening, Supporting, Encouraging

A key feature of the Ladies’ College is the very positive relationship that exists between staff and students. Every girl is recognised for her own qualities as an individual and staff are always ready to provide guidance and support.

There is a caring pastoral system led by the Lower and Upper School Co-ordinators who liaise with the form tutors to ensure problems are dealt with before they escalate. Bullying is not tolerated and any incidents are dealt with robustly.

In addition to the form tutors a prefect is assigned to each form to act as an additional source of help, support and mentoring for the younger girls. The prefects also run a weekly lunchtime activities session and this has the added benefit of providing peer counselling opportunities.

There are four College Houses – Brock, Carey, Durand and de Sausmarez. All girls are members of a House and these are led by the Sixth Form students who are elected to the offices of House Secretary, Captain and Treasurer. The Houses are responsible for organising team sports and other House competitions such as the yearly music and photography competitions. The House system also enables girls to mix with other year groups and provides a focus and recognition for their talents and abilities outside the academic arena so that all can feel they have contributed to the life of the College.

The girls elect representatives to the School Council which gives them a voice in the running and development of their community.

Girls are proud to wear a smart uniform, know that high standards are expected of them and that boundaries are fairly set with a clear policy of rewards and sanctions which promotes respect for others.
