Visit to The Ladies’ College

NEWS  SENIOR SCHOOL , SIXTH FORM , MELROSE , PRE-PREPARATORY

by His Excellency Sir Ian Corder, Lady Corder and Major Marco Ciotti

Today we welcomed the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Corder to College, accompanied by Major Ciotti. Their visit started in our outside classroom at Melrose where our visitors met a group of our youngest pupils (aged 2-3 years) who, as part of Melrose’s Outdoor Learning Forest Schools programme, were having a session on fire making and toasting marshmallows. One of the core Mindsets of Melrose and our Pre-Preparatory Department is to be resilient and so our plans for this special visit continued in the outdoor classroom, complete with umbrellas!

The tour then moved on to visiting Middle Prep (Year 1) and their class music lesson and Junior Remove (Year 4), who were having a practical Science lesson looking at how water travelled through plants. They had to see how long a 'stem' they could create with straws that they could then suck water up through. The Lieutenant Governor demonstrated an excellent technique, managing to suck water through seven straws, and the girls were very excited to see if they could beat him in this challenge.

After leaving Melrose, our visitors were then taken on a tour of the Senior School by our Head Girl, Deputy Head Girls and the Lieutenant Governor’s cadet, all students in our Sixth Form. The party visited our Modern Foreign Languages, History and Religious Studies Departments, finishing by spending time with students from across all year groups in our fortnightly House Assemblies. The Lieutenant Governor was very interested in our students’ language learning, having spent some of his recent career in Brussels and Lady Corder asked quite a few questions about the College’s House system and structures – with the girls in Brock House working on a treasure hunt in groups including students from Remove (Year 7) to Upper Sixth (Year 13). A good mix from across all years adding to some very competitive team working.

The visit concluded with a welcomed warm cup of tea and some of our Refectory’s renowned cake. A fitting finish to a very busy tour. With our sincere thanks to His Excellency, Lady Corder and Major Ciotti. Please come and visit again soon.
