A secure foundation, a warm welcome

Our Infant Department (Reception to Year 2) and Junior Department (Year 3 to Year 6) welcome girls from the age of four to eleven. The lovely Georgian building that houses the Ladies’ College Melrose was once a family home and a warm family atmosphere continues to this day.

At the heart of the school is our well-qualified, experienced and dedicated team of teachers and teaching assistants. Your daughter’s achievements rest on secure foundations as each girl is nurtured through these vital early years. Music is a particular strength: our Preparatory Choir, Junior Orchestra, Choir and Handbell team enter the Guernsey Eisteddfod each year and play at our Harvest Festival, Carol Service and on other special occasions. We offer tuition in recorder, clarinet, saxophone, fife, flute, cello, violin and piano. Drama is an important part of the curriculum and we are fortunate to have our own stage. Each year the Preparatory Department performs a Nativity play and the Junior Department puts on a major musical production in which every girl takes part.

Every classroom, as well as the Science room, has a Smartboard for interactive learning.  French is taught from the moment the girls enter the Reception class. A specialist ICT room and our two libraries support the curriculum. Close links with the senior school mean the girls are taught by specialist PE and Music staff and facilities such as the gymnasium are regularly timetabled for classes. A range of clubs and after-school activities, including Spanish and Fencing, is proving popular. Our Science club is held in one of the senior school laboratories.

Melrose girls are automatically offered places at the Senior School for Year 7. (Pupils applying from all other junior schools sit an entrance examination in Year 6 for the remaining places available.) Headteacher Mrs Sarah Spurrier would be delighted to show you the ‘Melrose way of life’ for yourself.  Please telephone 721338 for an appointment to view the school.
