PTA
Both Ladies' College and Melrose have Parent Teacher Associations.
Senior School
Being part of the broad and dynamic Ladies’ College community through membership of the PTA is a great way for parents to get to know the school well and help it in a very tangible way.
The most recent visible support has been the provision of a new stage, which is already proving invaluable as part of school life. Targets for this year are now being finalised and 2011 looks set to be an enjoyable and effective time for members. Fundraisers being considered include a ‘Strictly Dance’ Ball with visiting dance champions and a sale of boat accessories.
Ladies’ College PTA takes a pride in helping with a series of school events, as well as fundraising. Providing mulled wine and mince pies after the carol service, champagne at the leavers’ party and organising the Year 7 “Club” night add a strong social element to the school year.
With full awareness that many parents are juggling hectic working lives and families, the PTA is keen to extend its ‘Happy to Help’ list of volunteers. We keep the details of parents who can assist occasionally at events but who do not want to be involved in committee meetings or on a regular basis. If you feel able to support the PTA on a ‘Happy to Help’ basis or with ideas or regular involvement, please email Chairman Kay Leslie on kayleslie@me.com - we would love to hear from you.
Melrose
We are fortunate at Melrose that the PTA is, and has been for many years, such an integral part of our school community. In its time we have raised many thousands of pounds, which have been spent on improving equipment and resources to enhance our daughters’ education and the facilities in school in general.
Of course, there are times when we set ourselves ambitious targets, such as our most recent project of refurbishing the Melrose kitchen at a cost of £24,000. This fabulous new facility has enhanced the cookery skills of all our students – from making porridge for breakfast with our pre-schoolers to bread making with our juniors!
However, the Melrose PTA is about much, much more than just fundraising. We also like to think that through a varied programme of social events and fundraising projects, we help to make Melrose a friendly, caring and supportive community for the girls, their families and the staff.
Views about some of last terms’ events from our parents and students:
“What a brilliant evening (Snail Racing)! Everything was fine until my snail was abducted into outerspace!”
(Dad – Peter)
“The summer camp was such fun. I loved toasting my marshmallows on the bonfire. Roll on next year!”
(Amy – Form II)
There are lots of ways you can help and support your child through the PTA. Offering to help before events or at other times during the year is so valuable. It really is a case of ‘many hands make light work’. We are always keen to expand our list of volunteers so if you feel able to lend a hand, please email Susie Brown, PTA Chairman on Susie@gfs.gg
