Empowering Young Women

We create space for each girl to find her voice and determine how she wishes to shape the world for better.

Building confidence from the start

Since its inception, The Ladies’ College has been a place where young women are encouraged to speak up, think independently and pursue what truly interests them. Alumni include the island’s first female politician, one of the earliest British doctors, and others who have gone on to shape science, business, law, music, technology and journalism.

From the earliest years at Melrose, girls are encouraged to be curious, independent and confident. Through play, group learning and early leadership experiences, they start to develop their voice and build the foundations of resilience and self-belief.

Finding the power and value of your voice

Across the College, students take part in projects that help them think critically and communicate clearly. These include:

  • Public speaking at TEDx and The Big Debate

  • The Collas Crill Moot, introducing legal reasoning and structured argument

  • Presentations during Melrose Celebrations of Learning

  • Leadership shadowing with the Institute of Directors

These experiences help students of all ages grow in confidence and learn how to ask good questions, challenge ideas constructively and express their views.

Leadership in action

Student leadership is woven into daily life. Roles such as Form Captains, Senior Prefects, and the Head Girl Team give students the chance to develop their leadership style and take responsibility within the school.

Melrose girls begin to experience this early through age-appropriate roles that prepare them to step up in the later years.

Education should prepare young people for the future, not just the present.

Student-led Action Teams

Our Action Teams give students a chance to take ownership of areas they care about. These include:

  • ILEX – the College magazine
  • Creativity, Innovation, Technology & Learning
  • Community, Charities and Relationships
  • Wellbeing, Health and Connections
  • Voice

Each team is student-led, with staff support, and focuses on creating positive change within and beyond the College.
